How to put human-centric leadership into practice

5 minutes read

Human-centric leadership can sound like a broad concept. In practice, it often comes down to the small behaviours that shape how people experience your leadership every day.

Here are five ways to put it into practice.

1. Create clarity, even when you can’t provide certainty

You won’t always know what comes next. Rather than trying to create certainty where it doesn’t exist, be clear about what you know, what you don’t and what happens next.

Clarity gives people something to work with, even when the wider situation is still evolving.

2. Ask more, assume less

You cannot understand what your people need without listening to them.

Ask questions, invite different perspectives and resist the temptation to immediately provide the answer. Just as importantly, make it safe for people to raise concerns before they become bigger problems.

3. Focus on what you can influence

Periods of change can leave people feeling that decisions are happening around them rather than with them.

Help people distinguish between what is outside their control and where they can still take action, contribute and move forward. This can help restore a sense of agency when other factors feel uncertain.

4. Be consistent in how you show up

People need to know what they can expect from their leaders, particularly when everything else feels unpredictable.

Communicate consistently, follow through on what you say and be transparent when something changes. Trust isn’t built through one conversation; it is reinforced by what people experience from you over time.

5. Create space for the right conversations

Human-centric leadership requires more than communicating information. It means giving people opportunities to ask questions, raise concerns and talk openly about what they are experiencing.

That might mean checking in more regularly, asking a question you haven’t asked before or simply listening without immediately trying to solve the problem.

Putting it into practice

Human-centric leadership doesn’t require you to have every answer or remove every uncertainty.

It means creating clarity, listening with curiosity, focusing on what people can influence and being consistent in how you lead. These behaviours may sound simple, but when change is constant, they can make a meaningful difference to how people experience it — and how effectively they move through it.
